A two-time Western Amateur winner (1908, 1910), Phelps first came to prominence as member of WGA’s Olympic champion team in St. Louis in 1904 while in college, finishing 15th individually. Beat Harry Allen of St. Louis in 1908 Western Amateur final and fellow Chicagoan Chick Evans in 1910. Advanced to 1909 U.S. Amateur semifinal, 1912 quarterfinal. Won 1920 CDGA Amateur. On Yale varsity three years, captaining as senior.
