Illinois’ first great female player, Bessie Anthony won Onwentsia’s Governor’s Cup in 1900 and the first three Women’s Western Amateurs in 1901-03, establishing her dominance in the west. She capped her career by winning the U.S. Women’s Amateur at Chicago Golf Club in 1903, the first player from the west to do so, helping put the region on equal footing with the established east. One of the founders of the Women’s Western Golf Association.
