Coal baron who took up golf in middle age at Hinsdale Golf Club and saw a need to aid caddies late in 1913. He convinced fellow area club leaders to form the Chicago District Golf Association in the spring of 1914. In turn, they elected him first president of CDGA, which quickly added handicapping and scheduling to the caddie welfare duties he oversaw for the group’s first two years. Francis Peabody’s vision created the foundation of the CDGA we know today.
